I use the Functions rap video, on the video page, to introduce Function of the Day. Sometimes I have students list the math terms they hear during the video at the front of their notebook with a competition on who can write the most terms. I explain that throughout the bell work this year they will learn all about these function attributes and many more. I then show them the format suggested for their notebook (Number FOD, Date, Graph, 10 facts). I show them examples of different student notebooks from the previous year (if you have some). Then we do the first function together as a class, the linear parent function, or in Algebra 1, the origin.
Start FOD the first day you start teaching. For me this is usually day 3 of school. It helps to establish the routine every day so that students know the expectation.
I usually give quizzes every other Friday on a similar function to the FODs done during the week. At the top of my quizzes students graph and answer 10 questions about the function and then there are 5-7 questions to answer about concepts from class covered during the week. I have found that if the students know they are going to be assessed on FODs, they put more effort into learning how to get the correct facts for the functions throughout the week.
Every day - I do FOD 4 days a week with a quiz or activity for Friday bell work. Some teachers do FOD either once per week or two/three times per week depending on what works for them.
