Function of the Day gives students a meaningful math task as soon as they step into the classroom. This bell work grows in difficulty while continuously reviewing concepts to ensure students retain their learning. Students work together or independently to graph and analyze a function, recording the attributes in their notebooks. After 5 minutes, teachers discuss function characteristics, check for understanding, and reinforce vocabulary.
Function of the Day is suitable for use in nearly every high school math class, starting with Algebra 1. The two resource books currently available provide a year’s worth of bell ringers with answer keys plus various ideas for implementing Function of the Day in the classroom. The first book focuses on Algebra 1 concepts with an emphasis on linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. The second book includes functions from Algebra 2, making it applicable for use in any class at or above that level. Both books contain over 130 vocabulary terms. Functions can be modified to align with the curriculum and meet the needs of the class.
The advantages of regularly using Function of the Day are remarkable. Students will develop a better understanding of math concepts and vocabulary related to functions. Not only will this bell work build students’ confidence in math, improve math fluency, and long-term retention, it will lead to higher test scores (ACT/SAT/state tests) and prepare students for college math.
The author Debra Richardson provides her work as a resource for teachers across the nation to support students in strengthening their math skills. Function of the Day is being used by hundreds of teachers, who are witnessing remarkable progress in their students. Debra Richardson aims to support schools and districts by offering training and resources for teachers to implement Function of the Day to enhance student learning and achievement in math.
Function of the Day is great for all types of students, struggling students, English Language Learners, and even advanced students. Teachers can modify Function of the Day to fit the needs of their class and their curriculum. Function of the Day bell work may be done independently, with partners, or in small groups. Function of the Day can be used with Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Math, and Pre-Calculus, and other high school math classes. Function of the Day can also be used for cumulative ACT & SAT test practice.
Book 1 Table of Contents
Book 1 for Algebra 2 & Up contains 20 different types of functions and has 130 total functions. Functions increase in complexity. Order can be altered to fit your curriculum and your class.
Book 2 for Algebra 1 begins with sets of ordered pairs. Emphasis on this book is functions specific to the Algebra 1 curriculum with more linear functions, linear inequalities, systems of inequalities, and piecewise functions.
Function of the Day (FOD) sample pages from the book
Function of the Day #12 is Linear and contains the equation, with the graph, and several attributes about the function such as equation form, slope, intercepts, quadrants, axes, domain & range, and the parent function. This function requires students to solve for y in order to graph and identify function attributes.
Function of the Day #20 is Quadratic and contains the equation, with the graph, and several attributes about the function such as transformations, intercepts, vertex, axis of symmetry, minimum or maximum, domain & range, quadrants, increasing & decreasing intervals, and the parent function. This function allows students to FOIL to find the standard form of the equation.
